The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examination, administered and conducted in eight different zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculties from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Admissions to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE exam. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy or Master degree in any branch of Science  /Mathematics /Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate shall additionally secure admission to such a postgraduate program, as per the procedure of the admitting institution. Exam qualification, however, is not required by the candidates with Master degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy who may be seeking scholarship /assistantship for relevant doctoral programs.

The following categories are eligible to appear in GATE:

  • Bachelor degree holders in Engineering / Technology / Architecture (4 years after class 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programs.
  • Master degree holders in any branch of Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programs.

   Candidates in second or higher year of the four-year Integrated Master degree program (Post-B.Sc.) in the field of Engineering / Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree program and Dual Degree program in Engineering / Technology.

   Candidates with qualifications obtained from examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/ AICTE  as equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible for GATE exam.

GATE Offline Application Submission

Application Submission Process

Step 1: Make the payment 

Application Fee for General & OBC :- Rs. 800/-
Application Fee for SC/ST/PD :- Rs. 400/-

Two payment options are:-

A) Online Payment: Payment can be made using credit or debit cards or net banking account through the payment gateway of ICICI Bank / Bill Desk.
B) Offline / Challan payment: Payment by cash at (S.B.I) State Bank of India or Indian Bank Branches.

Step 2: Obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable)

Step 3: Apply Online

Candidates must follow the instructions provided on the online application form  page.

At the end of this process, a PDF file will be generated with 5 pages containing instructions, GATE 2011 Application Form institutes copy, student's copy, address slip, Bank Challan. Take a print out of the entire pdf.

Step 4: Cash Payment (only for Challan Payment option)
The Bank Challan(page 5 of pdf obtained above) will be printed in triplicate. Take it to any one of the branches of SBI or Indian Bank and pay the prescribed fees. Bank will keep a copy with them and will return the two copies. In those two copies, retain the Candidates Copy and attach the institute’s copy with the application form.

Step 5: Paste your recent photograph in the designated place on page 2 - sign at page 2 - paste page 4 on A4 Size envelope

Step 6: Post/Submission

GATE Online Application Submission

Application fee: Rs. 1000/- for GENERAL & OBC category and Rs. 500/- for SC/ST/PD category.

The submitted fee is not refundable under any circumstances.

Step 1: Procurement of Application Form

Candidate can receive a packet containing:
  • Offline Application Form
  • Information Brochure
  • Envelope
from:

1. Designated Bank Branches corresponding to each zone on payment by cash.
2. Zonal GATE Office after handing over Demand Draft of the appropriate amount.

Step 2: Obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable)

SC/ST and Disability Certificate should be obtained from appropriate and authorized authority.

Step 3: Fill in the Application Form

Step 4: Paste your recent photograph (3cm X 4 cm) in the designated place of OMR sheet
- Sign at the designated places of OMR sheet
- write the examination city first choice code, paper code and the address of the Institute on the envelope.

Step 5: Post/Submission

Duly filled-in Application Form with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers (corresponding to the 1st Choice of Examination City) to appear for the examination.

OR

It can be handed over personally to respective Zonal GATE Office.
